NBA Free Agency: Lakers waive Trey Jemison

The Lakers continue to make moves this offseason. It was reported on Monday that the team was signing Christian Koloko and Chris Mañon to two-way deals, and now they are waiving Trey Jemison III.

Jemison was signed onto a two-way deal last season and played in 22 games for the Lakers. He averaged 2.6 points and 2.8 rebounds for Los Angeles. With the South Bay Lakers, Jemison was able to be a bit more productive.

He averaged 10.5 points and 7.8 rebounds across four regular season games in the G League last year. However, that play never translated to the next level.

Jemison didn’t have many standout performances or show much explosiveness on either side of the ball with the Lakers. What he did provide was a player who could be depended on to make the right play and be a sort of defensive enforcer.

He always gave a total effort and never backed down from a challenge. These are good attributes to have, but his upside just wasn’t enough for the team to commit another two-way deal for the big.

He participated in Summer League for the Lakers, but didn’t have a strong campaign in Las Vegas or at the California Classic.

With Koloko and Mañon reportedly on two-way deals and Jemison getting waived, the Lakers have one open two-way spot to fill.

The question now is, who will the Lakers sign on that final two-way contract they have available?

It was initially reported that Eric Dixson would be joining the Lakers on a two-way deal, but recent updates have indicated that contract was never finalized.

The Lakers could still sign Dixon on a two-way or go in a different direction. DJ Steward, for example, was a standout for L.A. in Las Vegas Summer League and could take that spot.

Steward had a 14-point performance on Opening Night in Las Vegas and consistently showed promise as a scorer and perimeter defender.

While we don’t currently know who the Lakers will sign to fill their last two-way spot, we do know that the Jemison experience is over in Los Angeles.
