Nails scattered on SR 16 cause traffic chaos, pedestrian in custody

A significant traffic disruption occurred on westbound State Route 16 on Sunday morning after a pedestrian scattered a large number of nails across multiple lanes.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and state troopers are on the scene working to clear the debris.

WSDOT Tacoma updated via social media that the pedestrian threw the nails on the roadway at milepost 1.16 near South Union Avenue around 7:55 a.m.

As of 10:30 a.m. the off-ramp and right lane are still blocked. A sweeper truck is expected at the scene, but officials warn that it will take some time before the road can be reopened.

WSP said the pedestrian is in custody and will be booked into jail for first-degree malicious mischief
