‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ Sequel in the Works With Celine Song

Wedding bells may be ringing for Celine Song, who has been tapped to write a sequel to Sony’s My Best Friend’s Wedding, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The project is in early development, and at this stage, Song is attached to write, but not direct, and would not necessarily be her next project.

The film would follow the 1997 classic starring Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney as Julianne and Michael, a pair of best friends who made a pact that if they were still single at age 28, they would get married. When Mulroney’s character becomes to another woman (Cameron Diaz), Roberts had just four days to stop the wedding. The feature was a box office hit, earning $127 million domestically ($256 million today).

As a director and writer, Song helped elevate the romantic genre with Past Lives, which earned Oscar nominations for best picture and best director. It was a star-making turn for Greta Lee, who starred opposite Teo Yoo as former childhood friends who reconnect decades later. Song’s followup The Materialists has been a sleeper hit this year, earning $52.1 million globally and starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal.

In his review for The Hollywood Reporter, Duane Byrge wrote of Best Friend’s Wedding: “While the plot line has some unsettling pitfalls, this contemporary comedy sparkles with some shrewd insights into the pitfalls of women who are too sophisticated for their own good. My Best Friend’s Wedding is a generally adorable story potion, albeit not blessed with the classic bone structure that one might hope. In general, Bass’ scenario is kind and fair-minded, and while it doesn’t wind up in the grand tradition of romantic comedy, it’s an overall pleasing morsel. Special credit to director P.J. Hogan for drenching this wedding in the most sumptuous technical delectations.”

Collider first reported the news.

Song is repped by CAA and Jackoway Austen.
