“Mr. and Mrs. Smith” fans are going to have to keep waiting for Season 2.
Variety has confirmed with sources that the second season of the Amazon Prime Video series has been delayed indefinitely. Mark Eydelshteyn and Sophie Thatcher were set to star in Season 2, taking over the lead roles from Donald Glover and Maya Erskine in Season 1. No other castings had been confirmed. The first season featured an impressive lineup of guest stars, which was also expected to be the case for Season 2.
Season 2 was originally slated to begin production in the fall and had received a $22.4 million tax credit to relocate shooting to Los Angeles.
Reps for Amazon declined to comment.
Season 1 of the series ended on a cliffhanger, leaving Glover and Erskine’s character’s fates in limbo. But Variety reported that neither Glover nor Erskine were expected to appear in Season 2, though Glover remained onboard as an executive producer and co-creator of the series.
“Mr. and Mrs. Smith” was well received by both critics and audiences upon its release in February 2024. The series received 16 Emmy nominations for its first season, including those for best drama series, best actor in a drama (Glover), and best actress in a drama (Erskine). It ultimately picked up two Emmys — one for best stunt coordination for a drama and another for best guest actress in a drama (Michaela Cole).
“Mr. and Mrs. Smith” is a reimagining of the 2005 film of the same name that starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Per the official series description:
“In the first season of ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith,’ two lonely strangers land jobs working for a mysterious spy
agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travels, and a dream brownstone in
Manhattan. The catch? New identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith.
Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high-risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship
milestone. Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for
each other. What’s riskier: espionage or marriage?”
Glover co-created “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” with Francesca Sloane. Sloane is set to return for Season 2 in the role of executive producer and showrunner with Glover executive producing as previously mentioned. The series is produced by New Regency and Amazon MGM Studios.
Deadline first reported the production delay.
