Molly Shannon Stars In Will Ferrell Netflix Series, Ramy Youssef Exits

Molly Shannon (Only Murders In the Building) is set to star opposite her former Saturday Night Live castmate Will Ferrell in his upcoming golf series for Netflix, which has undergone major changes since the original May 2024 announcement.

The untitled 10-episode series stars Ferrell, in his first TV comedy series, as Lonnie “The Hawk” Hawkins, a fictional golf legend. Shannon will play his foul-mouthed ex-wife Stacy.

Originally, Ferrell was to star in the comedy alongside Ramy Youssef, with the two co-creating it alongside Josh Rabinowitz. Youssef, Rabinowitz as well as Andy Campagna of Youssef’s Cairo Cowboy banner all left the project last year due to creative differences, sources said.

New behind-the-scenes additions since then include Ferrell’s long-time collaborator Chris Henchy; Harper Steele, who starred with Ferrell in his Netflix documentary Will & Harper; as well as David Gordon Green and Andrew Guest.

The four executive produce the series alongside Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum and Alix Taylor for Gloria Sanchez Productions. Rian Johnson, Ram Bergman and Nena Rodrigue are executive producers for T-Street.

Casting for the roles, including Stacy, started with the new team in place following Youssef’s departure.

Shannon and Ferrell are from the same Saturday Night Live generation; she was on the venerable NBC late-night comedy from 1995-2021, he was from 1996-2002. Their many memorable sketches together include Dog Show.

Ferrell also starred opposite Shannon in the SNL offshoot feature Superstar, in which she reprised her fan-favorite SNL character Mary Katherine Gallagher. The duo recently reunited for a Funny or Die/Prime Video stint as Rose Parade hosts Cord Hosenbeck and Tish Cattigan.

Shannon is coming off her major recurring role on Season 4 of Only Murders In the Building, for which she shared in the cast’s Best Comedy Ensemble SAG Award. She will next be seen in the road trip comedy Driver’s Ed, Netflix’s People We Meet On Vacation, and Amazon-MGM’s action-comedy Balls Up. She is repped by UTA, Framework Entertainment and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.

Youssef and his Cairo Cowboy company are currently in development on an untitled Living Facility series for Netflix with Steve Way.
