Missing Wisconsin student found dead in Mississippi River

The body of a missing Wisconsin college student was found by authorities on Wednesday in southeast Minnesota.

The La Crosse Police Department initially stated that 22-year-old Eliotte Heinz was last seen walking south on the 500 block of Front Street South at about 3:22 a.m. on Sunday. According to ABC affiliate WXOW-TV, Heinz was a graduate student at Viterbo University in La Crosse.

On Wednesday at about 10:15 a.m., the Houston County Sheriff’s Office said they received a 911 call from a fisherman reporting that he had found a body in the Mississippi River just south of Lawrence Lake Marina in Brownsville, Minnesota.

La Crosse police, along with multiple other agencies, responded to the area and recovered the body.

The police department is continuing to investigate and awaiting autopsy results for an official cause of death.

La Crosse Police Chief Shawn Kudron released the following statement: “This was not the outcome we had hoped for throughout this search. Our thoughts are with Eliotte’s family, friends and all those who knew Eliotte. We are grateful for the outpouring of support from so many within the La Crosse community, the State of Wisconsin and nationally to locate Eliotte.”
