A Miss Universe contestant is recovering after she fell from the stage and was put on a stretcher.
In an update provided on Monday, Miss Universe President Raul Rocha said that despite “difficult moments and unexpected concerns,” Miss Jamaica Dr. Gabrielle Henry is in good health and nearing discharge from the hospital.
“We will continue to communicate only essential information with professionalism, sensitivity, and respect,” the statement said. “While unfounded speculation has circulated publicly, our full attention has remined on Dr. Henry’s care and recovery. We are grateful that she is now close to being released from the hospital.”
Henry, 28, fell off the stage while competing in the during the event’s preliminary evening gown competition.
She did not break any bones, but the fall resulted in head trauma, and lacerations to her chin and foot. Concern was substantial both from the gathered crowd and online onlookers.
Henry was forced to withdraw from the competition as she was treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a hospital in Thailand.
Miss Universe is paying for 100 percent of the related medical expenses, Rocha said, as well as hotel accommodation, transportation and assistance to the family throughout the process.
Henry, who is from Kingston, is an ophthalmologist who is an advocate for the visually impaired.
Her See Me Foundation provides educational and economic opportunities for people who are blind or have reduced vision.
Fátima Bosch of Mexico was crowned Miss Universe, marking the country’s fourth title in the event.
