Millie Bobby Brown Complaints About David Harbour, Explained

‘Stranger Things’ TV show presentation, Panel, Paleyfest, Los Angeles, USA - 25 Mar 2018

Millie Bobby Brown allegedly accused her Stranger Things co-star David Harbour of bullying and harassment before filming the show’s upcoming final season. According to the Daily Mail, Brown filed a lengthy complaint prior to filming, which spurred an internal investigation into Harbour’s behavior.

“Millie Bobby Brown filed a harassment and bullying claim before they started shooting the last season,” a source exclusively told the British tabloid. “There were pages and pages of accusations. The investigation went on for months.” While the results of the investigation are unknown to the outlet, the report notes that Brown did not accuse Harbour of any sexual impropriety. Brown was reportedly accompanied by a personal representative while filming the final season of the Netflix show in response to her complaint.

TheDaily Mail reports that an unnamed Netflix source said that while the streamer would “never comment” on an internal investigation, the fact that they did not deny it to the tabloid “speaks volumes.” “It will be a theatrical event. Nothing is going to overshadow this, not even the leading man’s private life,” the source said of Stranger Things’ last season, adding, “Millions of fans around the world have been anticipating the finale. No one wants anything to take attention away from that.”

Harbour’s personal life has become a big story over the past few weeks. Lily Allen, his ex-wife, released her new album, West End Girl, last month, in which she went into vivid detail about Harbour allegedly breaking the rules of their open marriage and being a “sex addict.” According to the Daily Mail, however, their relationship hadn’t totally soured when Brown allegedly accused Harbour of bullying. “Lily supported him throughout it all. It was a brutal time,” a source said.

Brown was 12 when Stranger Things premiered and Harbour, whose character becomes her legal guardian over the course of the series, has often spoken about feeling protective toward the actress. “I think she’s in the crosshairs of something extremely dangerous that nobody seems to be paying attention to,” Harbour said at the 2018 Critics’ Choice Awards. “Someone who gets this famous and has a brain that is not fully developed is an extremely difficult thing to navigate and I hope that she gets the help that she needs. I know I try to protect her as much as I can.”

In 2021, Harbour appeared on the podcast That Scene With Dan Patrick and said he and Brown had a “special relationship” because he’s known her since she was young. “I have a real, like, worry,” he said. “I worry about her and the fame and all that she has to struggle with. And I’ve just always felt this kind of deep fatherly affection for her.”

As with lots of reporting from the Daily Mail, it is probably best to take this with several grains of salt. Maybe even a handful or two. Representatives for Brown, Harbour, and Netflix did not respond to a request for comment from the Cut, and the tabloid was unable to produce the actual investigation. The only people who are really going to benefit here are professional body-language experts, who will have a lot of work to do once the Stranger Things cast starts popping out to promote the new season.
