Like other prolific showrunners, Robert and Michelle King are starting to build a King-verse, bringing actors from one series to another as new characters.
Following the end of the Kings’ supernatural drama Evil, one of its leads, Mike Colter — who also recurred on the duo’s The Good Wife and offshoot The Good Fight — is set to star in Kings’ latest project, Cupertino, pending a series order by CBS.
The legal drama, which was originally set up at CBS for development last summer, took a major step forward in May when, after the Kings’ pilot script had been well received, the network commissioned a full writers room to produce 12 more scripts. The room will open this fall after Robert King is done directing an episode of the duo’s CBS crime drama series Elsbeth, which returns for a third season.
Bringing Colter on board gives another boost to Cupertino — described as a David vs Goliath legal drama set in Silicon Valley — which is targeted for the 2026-27 season.
Colter will play a lawyer fired by a Silicon Valley start-up intending to cheat him out of his stock options. Refusing to back down, he joins forces with another recently fired attorney to represent those taken advantage of by the tech elite, and help them fight back in a high-stakes battle against the Goliaths controlling Silicon Valley.
Cupertino is produced by CBS Studios. Robert and Michelle King will write and serve as executive producers under their banner, King Size Productions. Liz Glotzer also serves as executive producer.
Colter, who played the breakout recurring character of drug lord Lemond Bishop on the Kings’ CBS legal drama The Good Wife, reprised his role on Paramount+’s The Good Fight. He starred as Catholic priest David Acosta on Evil, which wrapped its four-season run on CBS and Paramount+ last year. The role earned him two back-to-back Critics Choice Award nominations for Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
His relationship with the Kings resembles that between Amy Sherman-Palladino and Kelly Bishop and between Ryan Murphy and Evan Peters, which have each spanned multiple characters over multiple series.
Colter also is known for playing Luke Cage in the Marvel TV series for Netflix. He recently starred alongside Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg in the action-comedy film The Union for Netflix and opposite Gerard Butler in the Lionsgate movie Plane. Colter is repped by CAA, Strand Entertainment and McKuin Frankel Whitehead.
