They say good things come in threes—but it’s the same for bad things. And so it is for Microsoft users walking onto increasingly thin ice to install this month’s mandatory security update. Before you do so, you need to read Microsoft’s new warning.
We have already seen an emergency update to resolve an issue where Windows PCs “might fail’ during a reset.” Microsoft has told users that “if your device is impacted by this issue, we recommend installing this out-of-band update instead of KB5063875.”
That was quickly followed by the mystery of disappearing SSDs when writing large files. This is still under investigation by Microsoft and has prompted warnings for users to delay any large files writes until the issue has been resolved.
And now here comes the third. Microsoft warns that PCs may struggle with “severe stuttering, lag, and choppy audio/video” when using “NDIs (Network Device Interface) for streaming or transferring audio/video feeds between PCs.”
The Windows-maker says this issue hits “after installing the August Windows security update,” and it is “investigating this issue and will provide more information when it is available.” Meantime, users can “manually change the NDI Receive Mode to use TCP or UDP instead of RUDP.” Details on doing so can be found here.
Given the raft of issues and warnings, you are strongly advised to read Microsoft’s updated “Windows 11, version 24H2 known issues and notifications” before installing the mandatory update. If you have already installed it, read the advisory anyway. It is continually updated to provide the latest guidance on issues and mitigations.
Timing as ever is everything. Having cajoled the 700 million holdout Windows 10 users to make the leap to Windows 11 for years, this all comes just as those users are given a 12-month lifeline to stick with the retiring software they know and love.
That Microsoft u-turn has already triggered a reversal in what had been accelerating switches to Windows 11. August’s news flow won’t help change that back.
