NORMAN, Okla. — Michigan lost a top-25 showdown at Oklahoma 24-13 on Saturday night in Norman. The Wolverines fell to 1-1 and will wrap nonconference play next Saturday at home against Central Michigan.
Michigan’s offense scuffled all the night, Sherrone Moore made some questionable decisions on fourth down, and freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood was merely OK in his first road start.
Underwood was 9 for 24 for 142 yards. He was missing his top target from the opener, tight end Marlin Klein, who sat out with an injury. Justice Haynes was once again Michigan’s leading rusher with 125 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. Oklahoma outgained Michigan 408 to 288. A long Oklahoma drive that ended with a field goal sealed the victory in the final minutes.

FOURTH QUARTER
1:39 – Michigan gets stuffed on a fourth and 1 try to turn it over on downs. Oklahoma takes over with 37 seconds left and takes a knee.
10:11 – Oklahoma bleeds plenty of clock, with a face mask penalty extending the drive. The two-minute timeout stops the clock. Michigan uses its final timeout after the next snap, before a fourth and goal. The 21-yard field goal is good and Michigan is running out of time.

12:32 – After a 9-yard run for Underwood on the first snap, Moore calls timeout before the next snap. Michigan uses another timeout to avoid a delay-of-game penalty before eventually punting. Oklahoma fans chanting “overrated!” presumably at Underwood.
15:00 – Oklahoma’s drive continues. A 42-yard field goal is no good.
THIRD QUARTER
1:24 – The Sooners run two plays to close out the third quarter.
4:44 – Donaven McCulley with an incredible catch, pinning against a defender’s back for a 44-yard gain. Michigan stalls from there. Facing a fourth and 6 from the Oklahoma 17, Sherrone Moore again elects to kick. It’s good.

6:29 – Michigan sacks Mateer to force a punt. Michigan, after a short return, will take over at the Oklahoma 23.
8:03 – On third and 6, Haynes gained three yards. It set up a fourth and 3 from the Oklahoma 23. Sherrone Moore elects to kick and Dominic Zvada makes it. That’s a bad call by Moore, in my opinion.

10:05 – An offensive holding on the first snap was followed by a designed run for Underwood that lost five yards. It led to a third and 23: Michigan ran the ball for a short gain before punting. It resulted in a turnover: Oklahoma muffed it and Cole Sullivan dove to recover it.
12:07 – Jyaire Hill just misses an interception (he had two cracks at it), then Brandyn Hillman whiffs on a potential sack. The latter leads to a long completion down the sideline that gets Oklahoma in the red zone. Shortly after, Mateer runs in for a 10-yard touchdown.

13:36 – A three-yard loss on first down puts Michigan behind the chains. Bryce Underwood just misses connecting with Zack Marshall on a deep ball. Michigan goes three and out. The resulting punt is short.
14:49 – Oklahoma goes three and out on its first drive of the second half. Joe Taylor, not Semaj Morgan, fielded the punt, falling on the ball at the Michigan 26.
15:00 – On the first snap of the second half, Justice Haynes took a handoff and ran 75 yards for a touchdown. Michigan is on the board.

The Wolverines were shut out in the first half for the first time in 60 games. They mustered 118 yards and were 2 of 7 on third down. Michigan hasn’t been able to get its run game going, averaging 2.3 yards per carry.
SECOND QUARTER
0:22 – Jordan Marshall carried for 3 yards to end the half.
3:17 – Oklahoma takes advantage of the Michigan missed FG. John Mateer was slinging it all possession and bookended it with a 2-yard TD run. Some poor tackling by the Wolverines on the drive as well. Oklahoma up to 221 yards of offense.

9:25 – Michigan received new life after a roughing the punter penalty extended its drive. It didn’t cash in though as Dominic Zvada had a rare missed field goal, pulling it wide left from 32 yards. On the sideline, Bryce Underwood and RB Justice Haynes got in each other’s face. It hasn’t been a crisp operation offensively for the Wolverines tonight.

14:01—Michigan’s defense forced a punt after OU reached midfield. Starting safety Brandyn Hillman went into the medical tent after a big collision. Remember, the Wolverines’ secondary is already banged up. Linebacker Cole Sullivan, receiving more snaps with Jaishawn Barham suspended for the first half, sacked John Mateer on third down.

15:00 – Michigan’s drive was short-lived. Jordan Marshall ran for 3 yards on second down, and Bryce Underwood’s pass to Semaj Morgan in the flat was incomplete on third-and-5, leading to a punt.

FIRST QUARTER
0:28 – Michigan started on its own 38 after the interception and rushed up the middle with Jordan Marshall on the final play of the quarter. It was Marshall’s first carry after fellow RB Justice Haynes was on the receiving end of a heavy hit last drive. Oklahoma outgained UM 131-65 in the first quarter.
0:56 – On the second play of the drive John Mateer overshot his receiver, and safety TJ Metcalf intercepted the pass.

5:14 – Michigan started on its own 12 and drove into OU territory before punting from the Sooners’ 38. Bryce Underwood nearly threw an interception on a deep shot on the first play of the drive, leading the Wolverines to use a quick passing game the rest of the drive. OU read two passes behind the line of scrimmage and picked up tackles for loss.

6:34 – Oklahoma started on its own 6 after the punt but quickly got some breathing room, as Deion Burks burned CB Zeke Berry on the outside for a 34-yard catch near the UM sideline. Berry bounced back two plays later and had a key pass breakup. A drop on third-and-6 from the OU 41 led to a punt.

10:00 – No TE Marlin Klein on the opening drive for Michigan. It had one chunk play with Semaj Morgan getting wide open after some misdirection caught Oklahoma off guard. He picked up 19 yards, but Michigan punted from the Oklahoma 47 after a screen to RB Justice Haynes was snuffed out by the Sooners o third-and-5. Andrew Sprague is in at right tackle.

15:00 — Oklahoma makes an early statement, marching 75 yards in 12 plays to take a 7-0 lead. Former Belleville WR capped the drive with a 9-yard TD reception on a shovel pass from John Mateer. Gutsy drive by Mateer to open the game. He went 5 for 7 passing for 62 yards and also rushed for 14 yards. The Wolverines forced to third-and-9s but could not get off the field on either. No Rod Moore on the opening drive, but edge Derrick Moore started.

PREGAME UPDATES
– Michigan RT Andrew Sprague, safety Rod Moore, edge Derrick Moore and TE Marlin Klein are all in uniform for warmups. Klein appears to be the most limited of the group, with his right ankle heavily taped. Moore looked good going through drills, but it’s still unclear if he will see game action.

NORMAN, Okla. — Michigan’s football team has a chance to make an early statement in the 2025 season.
The 15th-ranked Wolverines (1-0) face No. 18 Oklahoma (1-0) under the lights Saturday night for their first SEC road game in program history.
Michigan’s new-look offensive with five-star freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood passed its Week 1 test, totaling 452 yards in a 34-17 win over New Mexico.
However, the Sooners’ defense under defensive maestro Brent Venables will present a much tougher challenge for the Wolverines, especially in what is expected to be a lively atmosphere in Norman.
Meanwhile, Michigan’s defense will be without starting linebacker Jaishawn Barham in the first half. The second-year starter was ejected for targeting last week, which automatically includes a one-half suspension the following game.
Like Michigan, Oklahoma’s offense ranked outside the top 100 in 2024, but it was active in the transfer portal for reinforcements. Its most notable addition is Washington State quarterback John Mateer, who shined in a 35-3 Week 1 win over FCS program Illinois State. He threw for 392 yards and three scores while adding 24 rushing yards and a touchdown.
The Wolverines were 1-3 on the road last year but ended the regular season with a shocking upset over Ohio State. They will look to pull off another upset Saturday but might be at less than full strength.
Starters Derrick Moore (edge), Marlin Klein (tight end), Rod Moore (safety) and Andrew Sprague (right tackle) are all listed as questionable. Moore didn’t play last week but the others did.
