Another messy split could be on the horizon in Dallas.
With no movement made on a long-term union between the Cowboys and Micah Parsons, ESPN’s Adam Schefter forecasts the once fruitful pairing is “headed towards divorce” after the relationship deteriorated throughout the offseason.
“You can’t get a deal done if you’re not even talking, and the two sides haven’t had any negotiations since late March or early April, and it sounds like at this point it’s personal,” the NFL insider said on Tuesday’s installment of his self-titled podcast.
Parsons, the Cowboys’ 12th overall pick in 2021, has been seeking a new deal as he enters the final year of his rookie contract.
Team owner Jerry Jones took a curious approach to the matter last month as the Cowboys opened training camp, taking a shot at the star defensive end, who tallied 12 sacks last season.
Parsons, 26, publicly asked for a trade in return, detailing in his social media request how a March conversation with Jones, 82, pivoted to contract talks, “but at no point did I believe this was supposed to be a formal negotiation.”
Schefter said he believes the bad blood has gone beyond the normal negotiations and posturing that play out publicly every NFL offseason between star players and teams.
“The Cowboys have come out and said what they said publicly at the start of training camp, which Micah didn’t like. Micah came out and asked to be traded, said he was ready to move on from Dallas, which I’m sure they didn’t like, and right now, both sides seem to be angry,” he said on Tuesday’s episode.
“Now, have other people put those feelings aside in the past and figured out a way to work out a deal? Yeah. I don’t see that happening here. I see these two sides headed towards divorce in time. The only question is, when is that divorce going to happen, and how is it going to happen? Are they going to trade him now? Are they going to trade him after this year? Are they going to move on? When?”
While Jones has encouraged Cowboys fans not to “lose any sleep over this,” he’s also resigned to the possibility Parsons could miss the season opener against the defending champion Eagles.
Schefter concurred that the parties don’t appear bound for the altar.
“It certainly doesn’t feel like these two sides want to enter a long-term relationship together,” he said. “That’s the way it feels today, and we’ll see if they do anything to change that before the regular season begins in a couple of weeks.”
The Cowboys aren’t strangers to ugly breakups, famously uncoupling from head coach Jimmy Johnson in 1994 following two consecutive Super Bowl wins.
The Eagles host the Cowboys in the first game of the 2025 NFL season on Sept. 4.
