Miami Vice Reboot Sets Release Date for 2027 With Joseph Kosinski

A reboot of “Miami Vice” is heading to theaters in 2027 from Universal and Joseph Kosinski, the director behind this year’s racing hit “F1” and billion-dollar blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick.” It will release in theaters on Aug. 6, 2027.

The new movie “explores the glamour and corruption of mid-80’s Miami” and is “inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking.”

Casting is currently underway for “Miami Vice,” and production will begin next year. The movie will be filmed for Imax.

The original “Miami Vice” was a TV show starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as undercover detectives in South Florida. It aired on NBC for five seasons from 1984-1989. Kosinski’s reboot will be the second film version, following a 2006 movie starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell. However, that movie was a box office flop, only making $165 million against a reported $135 million budget.

The new movie is produced by Dylan Clark (“The Batman”) and Kosinski and written by Dan Gilroy and Eric Singer, based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich from the series executive produced by Yerkovich and Michael Mann.

Kosinski delivered Apple Studios its first major hit with “F1,” which has raced to more than $620 million at the worldwide box office. It starred Brad Pitt as a washed-up Formula One racer who comes out of retirement to help restore glory to a failing team. The high-octane racing sequences proved to be a hit on the big screen, and it’s become the highest-grossing movie of Pitt’s career.
