The Mets added submarining righthanded reliever Tyler Rogers from the Giants on Wednesday to give their bullpen a different look. New York sends Triple-A Syracuse teammates—and one-time University of Tennessee teammates—Blade Tidwell and Drew Gilbert plus big league reliever Jose Butto to San Francisco in the exchange.

Tyler Rogers, RHP
Age: 34
Rogers has perhaps the most unique look in MLB. He is a true submarine reliever whose knuckles nearly scrape the ground as he delivers pitches. Rogers leads MLB with 53 appearances this season, as he has three times previously, including a high of 80 in 2021.
Rogers’ availability and effectiveness are good fits for a Mets bullpen that has struggled to find trusted high-leverage relievers. This season, he has pitched to a 1.80 ERA and 0.86 WHIP with 38 strikeouts and four walks in 50 innings. His 64% groundball rate is third-best among qualified relievers.
Giants Receive
Blade Tidwell, RHP
Age: 24
The Mets drafted Tidwell out of Tennessee in the second round in 2022. He progressed up the ladder as one of the more durable and effective pitchers in the Mets’ system before making his MLB debut this year on May 4.
Tidwell, who ranked 10th in the Mets’ system, has an effective fastball/slider combo that makes him tough on righthanded hitters, though he also throws a changeup and cutter. He pitched to a 4.22 ERA with 87 strikeouts and 32 walks in 79 innings for Triple-A Syracuse this season. Tidwell struggled in four MLB appearances for New York, allowing 15 earned runs on 23 hits in 15 innings. He struck out 10 and walked 10.
Tidwell has the type of stuff—headlined by a mid-90s fastball—that could make him effective in short stints if his command does not improve.
Drew Gilbert, OF
Age: 24
The Astros drafted Gilbert in the 2022 first round out of Tennessee and traded him to the Mets at the 2023 deadline in the Justin Verlander deal. This season, he is repeating the International League and showing vast improvement over his 2024 season, leading to him slotting in at No. 14 in the Mets’ prospect rankings. He is batting .246/.349/.435 with 12 home runs in 81 games for Triple-A Syracuse.
Gilbert is a lefthanded hitter with a sound batting approach but perhaps no carrying tool to hold down an everyday MLB role. He has the potential for roughly average power and has worked hard to improve his speed and range in center field. Gilbert must be added to the 40-man roster in November or be eligible for the Rule 5 draft.
Jose Butto, RHP
Age: 27
Butto has settled into a role as a multi-innings reliever for the Mets after working as a hybrid starter/reliever the three previous seasons. He has a strong changeup and has improved the quality of his breaking stuff over time. This year, Butto has appeared in 34 games and logged a 3.64 ERA over 47 innings with 41 strikeouts and 22 walks. He has no minor league options remaining.
