MediaTek has announced a new chipset for Chromebooks, which will debut in early 2026 with the promise of battery life improvements and the ability to run in fanless laptops.
The MediaTek Kompanio 540 is an octa-core chipset designed for Chromebooks, especially for student-focused machines.
MediaTek says that the chip will provide 35% longer battery life and will enable the use of laptops without a fan. It’s also said to work well in “thin, ultra-portable” Chromebooks.
MediaTek explains:
Powered by an octa-core processor with two Arm Cortex-A78 CPUs, a dual-core graphics engine, and support for premium LPDDR5 memory and UFS 3.1 storage, MediaTek Kompanio 540 enables smooth performance and effortless multitasking. Students can seamlessly switch between everyday tasks like browsing the web, streaming media, or gaming without lag.
With 35% longer battery life compared to the competition, MediaTek Kompanio 540 lets Chromebook users stay productive all day. Plus, its power-efficient design enables fanless operation for quiet performance that won’t disrupt learning; Kompanio powered Chromebooks are also light and run cool for true portability, a computing experience that’s always with you.
Kompanio chipsets are already used in a number of Chromebooks, with this latest release set to launch in Chromebooks arriving in early 2026.
