Bayern Munich found themselves on the lucky end of tonight’s Super Cup game versus VfB Stuttgart. Here are our Match Awards for the night.
Jersey Swap – Jamie Leweling
Playing on the right-wing for Stuttgart today, Leweling played the full 90 minutes and managed to bag a goal for his side. Scoring the only goal for a team that should have scored many more today is definitely a win, and his performance in all aspects of the game gives him this award.
Der Kaiser – Dayot Upamecano
The Frenchman put in a great shift for the 80 minutes that he played for Bayern tonight. With a huge number of tackles, duels, touches, and an impressive pass rate, Upa certainly played his role for the squad with fervour. The yellow card in his name may have soured the match for him, but it wasn’t his worst showing by a mile (is that the standard now?).
Der Fussballgott – Joshua Kimmich
You have to hand it to him, the German international had quite a good game today, despite Leon Goretzka having a pretty solid first half. Kimmich was on point for Bayern’s defense as well as for the attacking efforts, was involved in big chances and had a really good 94% pass rate. He may not have had the best moments on the pitch tonight, but overall, he put in a great shift and was key in the team’s success.
Der Bomber – Luis Díaz
The newly signed Colombian just edged over Harry Kane tonight, with some class skill moves and a very solid involvement in pretty much every offensive play that Bayern made. Michael Olise was strangely off his game tonight, and wasn’t able to do much for the team, as did Serge Gnabry who didn’t seem to be super dynamic in the final third. Scoring his first goal for the team, Díaz definitely had a very good game that he will remember.
Meister of the Match – Manuel Neuer
Although the actual defenders controlling the back line for Bayern had a decent game, Neuer’s heroics between the sticks managed to save Bayern from conceding an embarrassing amount of goals. Stuttgart should have been leading even by the half time whistle, but The Wall would not let that happen. Today’s performance will almost surely keep the Neuer doubters at bay, with 4 incredible saves (albeit, he did have some not-so-great passes here and there).
