Bayern Munich continue their victory streak with quite a satisfying win over FC Köln in the second round of the DFB-Pokal. The offensive lineup put up a pretty good performance, albeit after a strange lack of effort in the early stages of the game. Here’s our awards for the night.
The German striker had a decently good game tonight, having scored his team’s only goal. He also managed to rack up the most successful duels in the match and contributed to his squads defensive efforts. He might not have had the cleanest game, with three fouls, but he put his best foot forward for the entirety of the 90 minutes that he was on the pitch.
Der Kaiser: Konrad Laimer
Yet another game that proves just how underrated the Austrian is. He is slowly starting to get the recognition he deserves, and after a game like tonight’s, it’s basically inevitable. Laimer was extremely crucial for Bayern’s defense, completely dominating the right. He created a couple chances for his friends up front, but was also very important for the backline. With more than a few tackles, clearances, recoveries, and duels, Laimer is the man for this title. Dayot Upamecano also deserves a shout for his saves during the game.
Fußballgott: Joshua Kimmich
If you’re here to see if Kimmich won this award, here you go. Kimmich was undeniably a key player for Bayern in this game, recording an assist, having a pretty high pass accuracy rate, and being more than crucial in the final third of the pitch. And then there was that perfect corner — it was like he used an aimbot to find Harry Kane in that crowded box. Aleksandar Pavlović is a very close second, after playing in a role he doesn’t usually play. He was involved in some of the goals scored tonight, but Kimmich had a better performance overall.
It’s never a complete Lucho game if he doesn’t miss a couple of sitters every now and then, but he makes up for it with flare and a great performance otherwise every time. Today was no different. After recording both a goal and an assist, Díaz now has 16 G/A in 16 games, and it looks like he is not about to stop. Lucho showed good awareness to find Michael Olise during the buildup to that final goal, and that practically made up for those misses. Speaking of, Olise deserves a mention for this award too, with some amazing dribbling and skills to go with it.
Meister of the Match: Harry Kane
We might be in the middle of watching history being made. Harry Kane has 25 goals across all competitions this season, which sounds pretty good by itself. And he’s done it in just 19 games so far. Today was no less incredible than the others. Bagging a brace tonight, Kane produced a sensational finish to score his first, and then a clean header to make the second. The Englishman made more attempts at goal than he usually does, and it seemed like he wanted to be involved in the goal scoring process at every opportunity possible. He was instrumental for Bayern’s victory tonight, and he will have that same role for the season ahead.
