NEW YORK — Three people are dead and nine others wounded after a shooting at a New York City lounge early Sunday.
“We unfortunately will have to mobilize a mass shooting plan,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams responded during a press conference.
The shooting happened just before 3:30 a.m. local time inside at the Taste of the City lounge in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Immediately, numerous 911 calls came in to emergency responders.
Within minutes, officers arrived at 903 Franklin Avenue, finding that nine men and three women, ranging in age from 19 to 61, had been shot.
Three men died. One man, 19, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other men, 27 and 35, were critically wounded and succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.
The remaining victims are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at nearby hospitals, according to NYC Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
Investigators said a dispute inside the crowded club led to the gunfire involving multiple, up to four, shooters.
“Our crime scene investigators have now recovered 42 shell casings from multiple guns. The shell casings appear to be from 9 mm and 45 caliber weapons,” Tisch said, adding that “the shooting preliminarily appears to be gang-related.”
Tisch added that up to 60% of shootings in New York City are gang-related.
Detectives recovered a firearm in the vicinity of Bedford Avenue and Eastern Parkway, but are still investigating at this time whether this firearm was tied to the shooting incident.
“If you were inside the club, if you heard individuals talking about shooting, if you witnessed someone fleeing the location, every piece of information would allow us to put the puzzle together to solve this crime,” Mayor Eric Adams said, addressing the public. “The gun violence of this magnitude, it really scars a community and a city… we will continue our aggressive pursuit to remove these illegal guns off our streets.”
“Our prayers and our condolences to the family and friends of those who have lost their lives, and we are praying for speedy recovery of those were in the hospital,” said Pastor Gilford Monrose.
There was another non-fatal shooting at this same lounge in November 2024.
Police have not made any arrests, and the investigation is ongoing.
