Marvel Favorite’s Remake of a Classic 1989 Black Comedy Fights to a Disappointing Box Office Debut

Sometimes, when you play a well-known and beloved character in one franchise, it’s a challenge getting people to view you as someone else in a different role. Actors who play Marvel superheroes, for example, have been in a plethora of other projects, but none seem to be as big as their classic characters. Benedict Cumberbatch, who portrays Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has starred in many other non-Doctor Strange roles, such as Sherlock Holmes in Sherlock (TV series), Alan Turing in The Imitation Game, and more, with Theo Rose in The Roses being his most recent. The film, released in theaters on August 29, 2025, isn’t performing well at the box office, but its sales are slowly increasing.

The Roses, which is a remake of the 1989 release directed by Danny DeVito, made its box office debut, bringing in about $2.4 million, according to the box office website, The Numbers. That then rose to $4.3 million, and is currently around $6.5 million. These numbers can be seen as disappointing due to the star power Benedict Cumberbatch holds (which should convince his millions of supporters to watch the film in theaters) or based on the movie’s budget. However, it could continue to rise; it’s only been a few days since its release, so people may need more time to go watch it.

The 1989 film had a box office debut of $9.5 million, and the latest version, directed by Jay Roach, is expected to end its opening weekend with $7.35 million. That doesn’t seem like a huge gap, seeing how there’s only a $2.2 million difference, but that obviously does not account for inflation. The Roses, which is another adaptation of Warren Adler’s 1981 novel The War of the Roses, follows a picture-perfect couple (or, as it seems), who have successful careers, a loving marriage, and great kids. Theo Rose (Cumberbatch) and Ivy Rose (Olivia Colman) do a great job of hiding behind their masks, but underneath, a storm is brewing between the architect and restaurateur. Its Rotten Tomatoes synopsis reads, “Theo’s career nosedives while Ivy’s own ambitions take off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites.”

Other members of the cast include Andy Samberg as Barry, Theo’s divorce lawyer (also the Roses’ friend and Amy’s husband), Kate McKinnon as Amy, the Roses’ friend and Barry’s wife, Allison Janney as Eleanor, Ivy’s divorce lawyer, and Belinda Bromilow as Janice, Theo and Ivy’s marriage counselor. Tony McNamara wrote the screenplay, with Searchlight Pictures distributing the film. The Roses currently hold a 65% Rotten Tomatoes score and a 77% Popcornmeter score.

Benedict Cumberbatch Calls ‘The Roses’ a “Date Night Movie”

Date night movies usually include something romantic, but sometimes couples prefer horrors, thrillers, and even Black comedies. The actor told The Hollywood Reporter that The Roses is perfect for date nights, although the couple in the film are not lovey-dovey. “It’s weirdly a date night film. You either go, ‘Oh, it’s never going to be that bad.’ Or you get to laugh at it vicariously, or think, ‘Oh, that, that hit home,’ and have a talk about it and make sure it doesn’t go the way it goes for The Roses.” Critics are saying that one of the best parts about the new release is the laughs you’ll get while watching it.
