Mario turns 40 this year, and his fans are starting to worry that Nintendo doesn’t have anything planned for the mascot’s big milestone. Everything discovered so far that points to some semblance of a plan has led to a dead end. That’s why some people have started to hang their hopes on a newly discovered Twitter account Nintendo might be using as a placeholder.
Discovered by Beginning-Clerk-3573, who shared their discovery on the LeaksAndRumors subreddit, there’s an account with the handle @supermario40th on Twitter. The account is entirely blank apart from its handle, the name “aaaaaaa”, and a single account that it’s following – Nintendo Japan.
It has also started to gain followers as more people stumble upon the theory and choose to believe it might be rooted in truth.
Mario Has A 40th Anniversary Placeholder Account, But Does It Belong To Nintendo?
One look at all that and you’re likely rolling your eyes, ready to move on with your day, but hold on a second. There’s more weight to this theory than there appears to be on the surface. The main reason Mario fans think this placeholder account is the real deal is because Nintendo did the same thing for Mario’s 35th anniversary.
A few months before Nintendo revealed Mario’s extensive 35th anniversary celebrations, fans discovered an empty Twitter account with the handle @supermario35th. That account went on to be the anniversary’s official account in Japan, where news about everything Nintendo did to mark the occasion, like Super Mario 3D All-Stars, was shared. It still exists, but Nintendo hasn’t posted anything there since 2021.
It’s also noteworthy that this 40th anniversary placeholder account was created in July 2020. It’s here that the theory is either confirmed beyond a shadow of a doubt, or it completely falls apart, depending on where you stand. The 35th anniversary placeholder was discovered in July 2020. Nintendo, seeing people stumble on its secret, may have decided to lock down a 40th anniversary account five years early, just in case. Or, someone saw an opportunity and grabbed the handle, hoping Nintendo would come calling for it five years later.
Nintendo held a special Direct for Mario’s 35th anniversary on September 3, 2020, so if it does have 40th anniversary plans and sticks to the same timeframe, we will hopefully know more about what it has planned very soon. You’d think that Nintendo wouldn’t let a milestone this big pass without some big announcements, especially after it did so much to celebrate its leading man turning 35. However, it did almost nothing to mark Donkey Kong turning 40 in 2021. You never can tell when it comes to Nintendo.
