Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith’s daughter, Stella Banderas, got married to her childhood sweetheart, Alex Gruszynski, on Saturday, Oct. 18, and there were some serious A-list guests in attendance.
The wedding took place in Spain, far away from the paparazzi in Hollywood, which made it very easy for the camera-shy Malia, 27, and Sasha Obama, 23, to sneak in and attend the ceremony. According to Hola!, the sisters were the “most surprising of all” the guests after being spotted in Valladolid, near where the wedding took place. It’s unclear how Malia and Sasha know Stella, but the Obama women live in Los Angeles and probably run in the same circles with each other.

Malia is working in the entertainment industry as a screenwriter and film director under the name “Malia Anne.” She dropped her last name for the first time when her short film, The Heart, debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January. Her mom, Michelle Obama, commented on the change on the June 2 episode of the Sibling Revelry podcast, hosted by Kate and Oliver Hudson.
“Malia, who started in film—I mean, her first project—she took off her last name. And we’re like, ‘They’re still gonna know it’s you, sweetie.’ But we get it,” the former first lady joked. Michelle understands that her daughters are still trying to form their “own identity” and “own life” outside of Barack Obama’s political career.
“They are young adult women, but they definitely went through a period in their teen years where it was the push away … [where] you’re trying to distinguish yourself,” Michelle added while noting that Malia and Sasha are “very sensitive” to the “nepo baby” label.
“I mean, it is very important for my kids to feel like they’ve earned what they are getting in the world, and they don’t want people to assume that they don’t work hard, that they’re just naturally, just handed things,” she added.
It’s likely why both Malia and Sasha do their best to stay under the radar in Hollywood, and quietly attending Stella’s wedding proves how easily they move around without the press even knowing.
