EXCLUSIVE: Legal experts have been sharing their thoughts on the case of the missing woman Amy Bradley after she vanished without a trace from a cruise ship in 1998
Netflix viewers are desperate to know what happened to Amy Bradley after she disappeared from a cruise ship without a trace.
The streaming giant recently released the new documentary Amy Bradley is Missing, which tells the story of the 23-year-old woman who disappeared in March 1998 while on a Caribbean cruise with her family. Amy had enjoyed a night partying with her brother, before her parents woke up to find she had vanished.
Some viewers are hoping the docuseries could help get Amy’s case reopened. Legal expert Francisco Mundaca has spoken to The Mirror US about the case and revealed what could happen if the case does get reopened.

When asked about the chance of Amy’s case getting looked into, Mundaca said, “If you would have asked me this question at the beginning of my legal career, so almost 17 years ago now, I would have said it’s unlikely. Something monumental would have to be uncovered and particularly DNA evidence.”
However, Mundaca now believes otherwise. The expert, who founded the Mundaca Law Firm, explained, “I think it’s a lot more plausible for it to occur now. You know, we’ve even seen the Mendez brothers, because of media and celebrities, get renewed life and then they looked into an issue that was germane for that case.”
Mundaca did warn, “There has to be enough of a push with authorities and governments involved because it’s multiple people agreeing to cooperate with one another. Now, we can’t forget that the cruise line is a major factor here because you know, it occurred potentially while on their shift.
“And so that’s going to be an interesting component because they were essentially, from what I understand, the first investigators before they notified authorities at all or the FBI, which now there are laws in place that require notification as soon as possible.”
Mundaca suggested it is “possible” the interest in the Netflix show could “create new opportunities where, for instance, the FBI may reopen the case and essentially take lead on the investigation.” He suggested if the case were to be reopened, the FBI would likely “start anew” with their enquiries.
The legal expert did warn there could be some complications if the FBI re-investigate the disappearance. He told us, “With any with anything that receives a lot of interest, you may get a lot of false tips. And it’s going to be a monumental effort for if it in fact is reopened for the FBI and other authorities to have the go through all these tips to determine which ones are most credible.”
Mundaca concluded by stressing the “importance of cooperation amongst territories and separate jurisdictions.” He explained, “These cases are so complicated and time is of the essence. And you know, you can only hope that when these instances occur, everyone is notified immediately, everyone is is organized in the matter, which could then hopefully preserve evidence so that we minimize the amounts of of unsolved cases and missing persons.”
Former district attorney Alphonse Provinziano also spoke about the case, pointing to a “major challenge” investigators might face. “In this case, the missing person is a U.S. citizen, which means it falls under the FBI’s jurisdiction, but then you also have the registry of the ship and the Curacao authorities,” he explained.
Provinziano, a fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers based in Los Angeles, continued, “That can lead to conflicts over different standards of evidence and which agency will take the lead. Ultimately, without a clear authority, the question will remain whether it was an accidental death, suicide, or if she was removed from the ship against her will.”
