U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) continued to slam Republicans for not offering a plan to address rising costs of health care amid the ongoing government shutdown.
Greene criticized GOP leadership, including Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), for not offering any solutions to the rising costs of health care. Her criticism comes as Democrats have vowed to oppose any GOP spending bill that does not include an extension for health care subsidies, which are set to expire by the end of the year.
In comments to CNN’s Manu Raju on Wednesday, she blamed both Democrats and Republicans for health care issues. This comes more than a week after the federal government shut down after Congress failed to pass a spending agreement to fund the government past the Sept. 30 deadline.
“Everyone’s just getting destroyed,” Greene told CNN. “Look, Democrats, you created this mess. Republicans, you have no solutions. You haven’t come up with a new plan in place, and we’re not even talking about it, and it is hurting so many people.”
Greene sounded the alarm on the rising costs of health care in a surprising post on social media platform X earlier this week. She criticized Republicans addressing increasing costs of health care.
She also demanded in comments to CNN that Johnson bring the House back to Washington, D.C. Johnson has said that he will not order the House back in session until Senate Democrats vote for the GOP stopgap spending bill to reopen the government.
“I think he should really bring the House back in session for many reasons,” Greene said to CNN. “Any serious speaker of the House is going to build consensus within his conference behind a plan. It’s not something secret that gets worked on in a committee.”
She also said the “cliff is coming for millions and millions of Americans where their health insurance premiums are about to skyrocket.”
“So put your money where your mouth is,” she added.
She also criticized President Donald Trump’s advisers when asked if he is “straying from MAGA principles.”
“I’d never speak on behalf of the president, but I don’t think he’s always getting the best advice,” she said to CNN.
“I very much support the president, but I also work for my district, and I made that clear over and over again, that’s who has voted for me,” she added.
She also criticized her GOP colleagues for blaming Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) for the shutdown, warning Republicans are not winning the messaging war on the issue.
“I think the politics are terrible,” Greene said, according to CNN. “I don’t think anyone is sitting at home going, ‘Oh, this is great. The Republicans and Democrats have the government shut down, and they’re not discussing anything to fix it.’”
“Democrats are saying, ‘Continue to grow the debt with ACA tax credits’, and Republicans are just … calling it a Schumer shutdown, so I don’t think anybody is winning here, and I think it’s failure, and I personally don’t like it,” she added.
It’s not clear how long the government shutdown will last, as both Democrats and Republicans show no signs of budging.
While Trump has blamed the Democrats for the shutdown, Americans are more likely to say Republicans and Trump are responsible for the stalemate.
Thirty-nine percent of Americans blamed Trump and GOP lawmakers for the shutdown in a new CBS News/YouGov poll, while 30% blamed Democrats in Congress. Another 31% said they blamed both groups equally.
