M5 chip leak reveals Apple has big gains coming in key area

Today, Apple’s as-yet-unannounced M5 iPad Pro was seemingly leaked by the same YouTuber who last year leaked the M4 MacBook Pro. Thanks to the surprise reveal, we now have benchmarks for Apple’s forthcoming M5 chip, and they point to big gains coming in a key area.

M5 chip could offer substantial GPU upgrades over M4

Every year when Apple unveils its new iPhone chip, we get a preview of what to expect from the M-class chip in the same family.

The A19 Pro found in iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air is a solid year-over-year update in CPU. But where it truly shines is in GPU performance, thanks largely to Neural Accelerators.

Apple’s Tim Millet, VP of Platform Architecture, recently explained the benefits this way:

Our GPU gives us the ability to apply neural processing across applications that are traditionally more graphics-based. For example, gaming applications. Using AI to enhance the quality of the imaging, as well as to improve the efficiency of some of the image rendering.

Since the forthcoming M5 chip shares the same basic architecture as A19 Pro, it should come as no surprise that today’s leaked M5 benchmarks show similar GPU strengths in Geekbench testing.

When comparing M5 to last year’s standard M4 chip, the new chip showed the following CPU gains:

  • Single-core: about 10-12%
  • Multi-core: about 15%

These aren’t bad numbers, but they also aren’t especially impressive.

With the GPU though, gains go all the way up to about 35%.

You won’t necessarily see a 35% boost in all GPU applications. But with gaming, for example, M5 stands posed to offer huge upgrades over M4.

This should prove great not only for the new iPad Pro, but also upcoming M5 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models.

Another noteworthy detail from benchmarks: the leaked M5 iPad Pro is a 256GB model that contains 12GB of RAM, up from the 8GB of last year’s comparable M4.

However, it’s likely Apple will include 16GB or more with its higher storage tiers, just like it did with more pricey M4 models last year.
