Lucas: Blue-White Rapid Reactions – University of North Carolina Athletics

By Adam Lucas

1. White took a 55-50 win on a day when the teams looked like this: Blue was Zayden High, Jarin Stevenson, James Brown, Seth Trimble, Luka Bogavac and Evan Smith. White was Caleb Wilson, Henri Veesaar, Kyan Evans, Jaydon Young, Jonathan Powell, Elijah Davis and John Holbrook. The game was two 12-minute halves.

2. The Heels played without freshmen Isaiah Denis and Derek Dixon. Denis was held out due to a lower extremity injury, while Dixon has an upper extremity injury.

3. Dixon was missed on the Blue team, which could have used a facilitator to allow Trimble to play off the ball a little more. The vast majority of White’s baskets were assisted, while Blue had to create more offense one-on-one.

4. Putting Wilson and Veesaar on the same team allowed Carolina to show off how difficult they will be to defend on the same team during the regular season. Veesaar makes Wilson a much tougher matchup because opponents won’t be able to put their best big man on him.

5. Wilson is also so quick off the floor. He showed off that leaping ability after grabbing an offensive rebound and immediately leaping to slam it through one-handed. He’s more than just a dunker, though. He also showed off a jump hook that he’s been working on with Sean May and a post fadeaway that he says is one of his favorite shots.

6. Luka Bogavac hit multiple three-pointers but made just one two-point shot. He’s consistently shown more of a mid-range game than that in practice.

7. Steady floor game from the White guards. Young and Evans did a good job keeping the ball moving, and Young especially made a couple nice extra passes. Evans’ point guard game has developed even during his brief time in Chapel Hill, and it’s reasonable to expect he’ll make even more progress in that area between now and the season opener.

8. The most notable takeaway is how many more pieces the Tar Heels have than last year. There was enough depth to fill two quality teams, and both sides showed off size, occasional outside shooting ability and versatility. Hubert Davis is going to have multiple options at his disposal for how to defend opponents and create offense.
