The Los Angeles Chargers today signed safety Tony Jefferson to the active roster from the practice squad, filling the spot vacated by outside linebacker Khalil Mack being placed on Reserve/Injured. Additionally, the Bolts signed outside linebackers Clelin Ferrell and Rashad Weaver to the practice squad.
Jefferson came out of retirement to sign with the Chargers in 2024, emerging as a key contributor on both defense and special teams with the Bolts. Over the last two season, he has appeared in nine games in the regular season, making six starts, including the victory over Las Vegas last week. With the Bolts, Jefferson has posted 32 tackles (19 solo), a tackle for loss, an interception and two passes defensed. He started the team’s AFC Wild Card matchup and registered three tackles (two solo), two tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a recovery.
Over the course of his career, Jefferson has been a productive defender, starting 72-of-122 career regular-season contests with the Cardinals, Ravens, 49ers, Giants and Chargers. The 11-year veteran has totaled 500 tackles (370 solo), 9.5 sacks, 35 tackles for loss, five interceptions, 26 passes defensed, eight forced fumbles and four recoveries in the regular season. The Southern California native has appeared in seven career postseason contests, making five starts and recording 41 tackles (24 solo), five tackles for loss, a pair of passes defensed, a forced fumble and a recovery.
Jefferson played three seasons (2010-12) at the University of Oklahoma, appearing in 40 games and totaling 258 tackles (180 solo), seven sacks, eight interceptions, 13 passes defensed, a forced fumble and a recovery. He burst onto the scene as a freshman, playing in 14 games while posting 65 tackles (44 solo), a pair of interceptions, a fumble recovery and breaking up seven passes, earning Freshman All-America recognition as well as Big 12 Co-Defensive Freshman of the Year honors.
Ferrell has started 57-of-89 career regular season games with the Raiders, 49ers and Commanders since being the No. 4 overall selection in the 2019 NFL Draft by Oakland. He’s totaled 17 sacks, 156 tackles (82 solo), 12 pass breakups, 25 tackles for loss, four forced fumbles and two recoveries. Ferrell has appeared in four postseason games, recording four tackles (two solo) and a pass breakup. He played three seasons at Clemson (2016-18), playing in 44 games for the Tigers. He was a two-time first-team All-America selection from The Associated Press, finishing his career ranked fourth in program history with 27 sacks, adding 164 tackles (83 solo), five forced fumbles, a recovery and seven pass breakups. Ferrell will wear No. 57 for the Chargers.
A fourth-round selection by Tennessee in the 2021 NFL Draft (135th overall), Weaver has played in 36 career games for the Titans and Houston Texans, making four starts. Defensively, he has 45 total tackles (26 solo), 5.5 sacks, seven pass breakups, two forced fumbles and a recovery. Weaver played three seasons at Pittsburgh (2017-18, ’20), earning consensus first-team All-America honors in 2020 after missing the 2019 season due to injury. With the Panthers, he appeared in 35 career games, totaling 110 tackles (67 solo), 17 sacks, 34.5 tackles for loss, five forced fumbles, four recoveries and nine pass breakups. Weaver will wear No. 51 for the Bolts.
