Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown is facing backlash after celebrating a touchdown by performing President Donald Trump’s signature dance while he watched from the stands Sunday.
During last Sunday’s game between the Lions and Washington Commanders, Trump attended Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, to watch the game It was the first time a sitting president had attended a regular-season NFL game since Jimmy Carter in 1978. Only three sitting presidents have attended regular-season games, including Richard Nixon in 1969.
With 1:57 left in the first quarter, St. Brown caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jared Goff. St. Brown then pointed to the area where Trump was sitting and started doing the dance, moving his arms and twisting his hips. St. Brown received significant backlash on social media and from former NFL cornerback Jourdan Lewis.
“The truth comes to light,” Lewis said in a deleted post, according to Fox News. “You do that in one of the Blackest cities in America?”
St. Brown addressed the dance on his podcast released Wednesday, saying he did not intend for the dance to show support for either side of the political spectrum.
“First of all, if I offended anyone, I do apologize,” St. Brown said. “I did not mean to offend anyone. It was just that we were having fun. If any president were at that game, if they had a dance, I would have done it. It had nothing to do with who the president was. Even after the game, I found out, someone told me, that was the first game that a president has been to in over 40 years for a regular-season game, which was crazy.
“We were just having fun doing the dance,” St. Brown continued. “It was nothing more, nothing less. Just a quick shimmy, whatever you call it. It was nothing serious and nothing political.”
The Lions (6-3) will face the Eagles (7-2) on Sunday night in a game with playoff implications. The Eagles currently hold the top spot in the NFC with a 7-2 record. The Lions are 6-3, leading the NFC North and would be the third seed if the playoffs started today. The winner would gain a significant head-to-head tiebreaker advantage that could prove crucial for playoff seeding.
