‘Lightyear’ Writer Reminds Snoop Dogg Exactly Why Film’s Lesbian Couple ‘Matters’

Lauren Gunderson — who is credited for contributing “additional screenplay material” for “Lightyear” — revealed on Threads that she “created” the lesbians when, while writing early versions of what would later become the film back in 2018, “a key character needed a partner.”

“It was so natural to write ‘she’ instead of ‘he,’” wrote Gunderson in part of a series of posts on Wednesday.

“As small as that detail is in the film, I knew the representational effect it could have. Small line, big deal. I was elated that they kept it. I’m proud of it. To infinity. Love is love.”

The film — which serves as an origin story for Buzz Lightyear of the “Toy Story” movies — sees Alisha Hawthorne, Buzz’s best friend and commanding officer, married to another woman and sharing a kiss.

Snoop, on a recent episode of the “It’s Giving” podcast, said his grandson asked him how a woman could have a baby with another woman while watching “Lightyear” together.

“Ah, shit. I didn’t come in for this shit, I just came to watch the goddamn movie,” said the rapper, who once told HuffPost that he supported gay marriage and once had a cameo on the groundbreaking lesbian TV drama “The L Word” back in 2004.

He later added, “It threw me for a loop. I’m like, these are kids, we have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.”

Gunderson — who wrote that Snoop “sucks” and hopes “he joins the side of Love 🙂” — noted that she had “very little to do with the final script” as she was one of a few writers over the course of several years.

She added that she’s proud to see a “happy queer couple” onscreen, nonetheless, even if it’s only for a few seconds.

“I know they got a lot of shit for this inclusion, but stuff like this matters because beautiful love like this exists,” Gunderson wrote.
