Moments after the Jacksonville Jaguars handed the San Francisco 49ers their first loss of the season, Liam Coen appeared to have some choice words for 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh as the coaches walked off the field.
The Jaguars’ first-year coach appeared to shake his head as Saleh tried to approach him after the game. Coen continued to walk past Saleh to leave the field before turning around and yelling, “Keep my name out of your mouth,” toward Saleh. Saleh then started walking in Coen’s direction, but it’s unclear what he may have said.
In the days leading up to the game, Saleh praised the Jaguars for having “a really advanced signal-stealing type of system, where they always find a way to put themselves in an advantageous situation.” In answering questions about his comments in the same news conference, Saleh reiterated that he wasn’t accusing the Jaguars of doing anything beyond the rules.
“There’s nothing illegal about it,” Saleh said to a follow-up question. “I’m not suggesting that.”
Asked about his words to Saleh after the game, Coen decided to keep the details private.
“Not a big deal,” Coen said. “Just keep that between us.”
As the defensive coordinator, Saleh is not required to be available for comments after the game. However, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan shrugged it off when asked about the incident.
“I will try to clear it up, but I didn’t see what happened,” Shanahan said. “So, I am not sure. I don’t think he should be that sensitive about it, but it is what it is. Not too worried about it.”
When Coen was asked about Saleh’s comments Friday, the Jaguars coach chose not to address it.
“I’m not going to speak on that fully right now,” Coen said. “(We) have a huge game for us coming up this weekend. We’ve got a great defense that we’ve got to go and attack, and that’s where our whole mindset and mentality is right now.”
Jacksonville’s offense had 325 yards of total offense against the 49ers, with 174 through the air and 151 on the ground, including a 48-yard run by Jaguars running back Travis Etienne Jr.
