After being freed from the confines of his baseball hat, it looks like Leonardo DiCaprio has been liberated from the emotional baggage of being a 50-year-old man. In a new interview for Esquire’s “Mavericks of Hollywood” issue, DiCaprio’s One Battle After Another director Paul Thomas Anderson asked him, “If you didn’t know how old you are, how old are you right now?” An interesting question, sure, but even more fascinating because DiCaprio responded “32.” Even in his mind, he’s still older than his girlfriends.
Anderson advised the actor that he’ll have to “investigate what happened when you were 32, and then you’re going to discover and uncover why that was your answer.” To be fair, Anderson, who is 55, added that he felt emotionally 27. Maybe they both have a lot to unpack?
Later in the interview, the two circled back to the age thing when Anderson asked if turning 50 felt like a natural time for reflection for DiCaprio, who then joked that he felt “emotionally 35.” After that, he got more serious, explaining that aging “creates a feeling like you have a desire to just be more honest and not waste your time.” He added that “you have to just be much more upfront. It’s almost a responsibility because much more of your life is behind you than it is ahead of you.” I wonder what his 27-year-old girlfriend thinks about that.
