The upcoming ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X handhelds are the result of a collaboration between Microsoft and ASUS, powered by AMD hardware. At Gamescom last week, Xbox was keen to show off all the new features coming to improve your experience on Windows handhelds, and now, support for these features has been confirmed for at least two other devices: the Legion Go S and MSI Claw 8 AI+.
It’s clear to us that Microsoft wants Windows to be a leading operating system for handhelds – not just desktop PCs and laptops. Now that Valve’s rival SteamOS has made its way to third-party devices, comparisons between Windows and SteamOS on the likes of the Legion Go S show Valve’s Linux-based OS is better, performance-wise. Xbox integration looks to turn the tide.
Legion Go S and MSI Claw 8 AI+ confirmed for ‘Xbox on handhelds’ support
Over on the official ‘Xbox on handhelds‘ page, you can read all about the upgrades coming to the ROG Ally handhelds. This includes features such as the Xbox full screen experience, the aggregated library, and Xbox’s Play Anywhere feature. The full screen experience delivers a console-inspired UI, much like what we already see on the Steam Deck.

Lenovo’s Legion Go S doesn’t feature the latest flagship Z2 Extreme chip featured in the ROG Xbox Ally X or the upcoming Legion Go 2, but there is a model available with the cut-down Z2 Go instead. The MSI Claw 8 AI+ is powered by older Intel Lunar Lake hardware, but it still holds its own versus the competition and has proven to be comparable to the Z2 Extreme.

Xbox doesn’t specifically mention the original Legion Go or MSI Claw, though both are Windows 11 handhelds and will possibly be compatible with the upgrades lent by Xbox integration. One of the most exciting upgrades for us is the fact that Xbox’s full screen experience cuts back the bloat of Windows when you’re gaming, making it act more like Valve’s lightweight SteamOS.

ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X handhelds will be available on October 16; Microsoft has already been testing improvements for the Xbox App that will benefit handheld and PC gamers.
