We were recently provided with the release date for the Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection. The digital version will be released on October 30, 2025 while those wanting a physical copy will have to wait until December 12, 2025.
This collection will consist of various versions of Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2, Mortal Kombat 3, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Mortal Kombat 4, Mortal Kombat Advance, Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero and Mortal Kombat: Special Forces.
However, it should be noted that Mortal Kombat Advance, Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance and Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition will be featured within the Legacy Kollection based on how they originally appeared in handheld devices.
Of course, we’ll also get access to the Game Gear and Game Boy versions of Mortal Kombat, as well as the Game Boy version of Mortal Kombat 2. Unfortunately, none of these handheld games will feature any multiplayer components.
During an interview with MK Secrets, Dan Amrich of Digital Eclipse explained why this is.
“The handheld games are not two player. They’re one player experiences because we figured there are some emulation issues with emulating link cables. It can be done, but it is very difficult sometimes.
“And, most of the handheld games, that was a solitary experience. One person is holding that system and playing the game themselves. So it felt like, it’s okay, like you’re holding a Game Gear to play the Game Gear version of Mortal Kombat.
“Sure, there were ways to play some of these games [with] two players. The Game Boy Advance games, for sure. They had a link cable, but everyone had to have their own system. And here, we’ve got one instance of the emulator running.
“So, what does that get you? It gets you single player. We were talking about ‘What’s the workaround for that?’ Not at launch…”
Once again, Amrich hints at the possibility that a feature like this could come later down the road as DLC. Of course, he makes no guarantees that this will happen, and it will likely depend on how successful the Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection ultimately ends up being.
