The Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection is set to bring back more than 20 classic titles, but there’s one in particular that very few people have ever gotten to play before.
Digital Eclipse already announced that Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero and Special Forces will be part of the Legacy Kollection, however, their Gamescom 2025 trailer revealed one more surprise game that was previously considered lost media.
The developers have gone out of their way to find and include the WaveNet version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 as well, which is a really nice find for the community.
For those who likely don’t know, WaveNet was a short-lived arcade service in the mid-’90s that offered some ahead of its time features like online play and the theoretical ability to offer patches / updates to machines, but since it required expensive T1 internet and not simply dial-up, they were a bit too ahead of their time.
There’s not even a ton of information online about the WaveNet arcade version of UMK3 since it never received a wide release or any other ports previously.
This updated version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 was only available at a few test locations in Chicago and San Francisco from around 1996 to 1997, and then it was presumed to be lost to time.
Thought to be lost to time after its limited run in arcades, WaveNet joins Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection offering Noob Saibot’s first appearance as a playable character in this nearly unseen final balance patch for the UMK3 era.#MKLK #UMK3 #WaveNet pic.twitter.com/Jn4JhyQRtw

But thankfully, it appears the ROM was preserved somewhere in the depths of NetherRealm Studios, and now Digital Eclipse is reviving it so that the vast majority of players can experience it for the first time.
The WaveNet version is special / interesting for a few reasons, and one of them is that it was the first time Noob Saibot was featured as an actual playable character.
They also made some balance changes over the base Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 in arcades by reportedly removing Stryker’s infinite combo, nerfing Kabal’s dash and Kung Lao’s spins.
But there’s a decent chance there are even more adjustments and Easter eggs that aren’t well documented because of the WaveNet’s limited release run.
So now the Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection will offer up something unique and new that hasn’t been available before.
The Legacy Kollection includes multiple versions of the first four mainline Mortal Kombat games, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, the aforementioned titles and Game Boy Advance Games with online play using rollback netcode available on all of them except the handheld titles.
We still don’t have a release date, but a recent leak suggests the collection may be coming sometime in October.
The Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection is currently in development for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
