Apple’s iPhone 17 event is just a couple of days away, but that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill producing some last minute morsels. A purported document from a South Korean carrier has indicated some tech specs about the iPhone 17 line.
We’ve heard for a while that the 17 Pro and Pro Max would get improved telephoto camera systems. This doc says it will actually go up to 8x, compared to the 5x zoom found on iPhone 16 Pro models. There’s also expected to be a dramatically improved cooling system …
The new aluminium frame found in all the iPhone 17 chassis should help with cooling already, as aluminium is a very good heat conductor. However, the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max phones are expected to go one step further.
The Korean carrier documentation indicates that both Pro phones will sport a new vapor chamber cooling system. This feature has existed in some high-end Android phones for a while, and basically serves as a mechanism to disperse hot air away from the CPU/GPU components. This allows the silicon-on-a-chip to run at full performance modes for longer, before it hits thermal limits and throttles down.
In the context of an Apple Pro phone, this means the ability to play intensive 3D games for longer with stable frame rates, longer recording sessions for ProRes video outdoors, and more. The doc also references an 8K video recording mode, something which would also benefit from improved thermal efficiency.
The carrier doc was first sourced by Jukan on X yesterday:
It’s unclear whether these specs are definitely sourced from an official channel. Historically, carriers have sometimes been known to create documentation like this in advance of official announcements based on consensus rumors.
But the details listed here do not seem like a mere repeat of previous rumor mill claims. The 8x zoom number is very specific, for instance. Previous rumors have quoted 7x zoom or 10x zoom distances, but not 8x.
Bloomberg has previously said that the iPhone 17 Pro will feature a variable aperture system, where the optical zoom distance can vary mechanically. This would be a major change from all past iPhone models which all have fixed zoom distances.
We’ll know for sure in a little over 48 hours time, when Apple’s ‘awe-dropping’ September event kicks off. Stay tuned to 9to5Mac for full coverage of all the announcements. We are expecting the company to unveil the new iPhone 17 lineup, new Apple Watches, and AirPods Pro 3.
