Kylie Jenner defends gold dress worn to Hailey and Justin Bieber’s wedding

Kylie Jenner is known for going over the top when it comes to major fashion moments. But sometimes, she misreads the dress code.

Recently, the lip kit queen explained why she chose to wear a glitzy gold foil dress with cut-outs at Hailey and Justin Bieber’s 2019 wedding celebration.

“I think people were, like, a little upset that I went all out,” Jenner told Vogue in a new video interview, referring to the one-shouldered dress by the Australian design duo J’Aton Couture.

“But they didn’t care, I don’t think,” she added as she mimed picking up a phone. “Hailey, call me if you have an issue,” she laughed.

The Kylie Cosmetics mogul then broke down her reasoning behind wearing the spectacular metallic gown, which all but stole the spotlight from Hailey’s stunning custom Virgil Abloh for Off-White lace bridal gown.

“I probably wouldn’t wear this now to someone’s wedding,” the reality star confessed to the camera. “But I think I had the impression that people were gonna just be going all out, and I loved this look.”

Justin and Hailey’s lavish, star-studded South Carolina wedding took place in September 2019 following a September 2018 civil ceremony — and the youngest Jenner divulged that she fully enjoyed herself at the soirée.

“I had one of the best nights, actually,” she told Vogue. “I was the last one to leave the wedding.”

At the time, the “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” personality faced backlash after she was pictured modeling the gilded J’Aton Couture creation, which featured an alluring thigh-high slit and dramatic foil-like folds of fabric.

She styled the luxe look with matching gold Stuart Weitzman stiletto sandals, an Elizabeth Stone Jewelry butterfly hairpin, and a crystal-studded Judith Leiber Couture butterfly clutch.

A delicate butterfly adorned the skirt of the extravagant, head-turning gown.

“You don’t show up to a wedding trying to look better than the bride… just rude,” one Instagram user wrote at the time, per the Daily Mail.

On X, formerly Twitter, another person wrote, “I feel like u should be…idk……WAY more lowkey than the bride for a wedding that isnt urs.”

Another called the move “disrespectful,” and yet another wrote that they’d “call the police” if Jenner wore the spotlight-stealing design to their own wedding.

Jenner and the Rhode maven, both 28, are longtime pals and are often seen hanging out, so clearly, there’s no bad blood over the apparent fashion misstep.

Most recently, Bieber made a high-profile appearance at Jenner’s Kylie Cosmetics pop-up event in West Hollywood on Friday.

The model rocked a chic belted strapless black dress, while Jenner wore a bubble gum pink latex dress and a matching pink wig that harkened back to her colorful “King Kylie” era.

Sure, it’s hard keeping up — and even the Kardashian family makes fashion missteps — but Kylie Jenner proves it’s a worthwhile race.
