Days after celebrating her 12th wedding anniversary, Kristen Bell is explaining exactly why she chose Dax Shepard to be her other half.
“I am glad I chose my husband, because he has a commitment to growth at all times,” Bell said Tuesday on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live. “I don’t like the idea that you’re like looking for your perfect puzzle piece, because you also have to become a puzzle piece that fits with someone else.”
She continued, “So if you find two people that are like, ‘Yeah, we’re gonna make this work,’ and that means we’re gonna compromise constantly, and those compromises should work well for both of us. And sometimes it’s gonna ebb and sometimes it’s gonna flow, but we’re not gonna have checks and balances because we’re gonna realize it’s not me against you, it’s us against the world.”

Bell, who was promoting the new season of Netflix’s Nobody Wants This, also said she appreciates that her husband shares her profession, which is something that costar Adam Brody had said about his own wife. He and Gossip Girl alum Leighton Meester tied the knot in 2014.
“I would agree. I like being married to an actor,” said Bell, who shares daughters Lincoln, 12, and Delta, 10, with Shepard. “We understand each other’s highs and lows and excitements and complaints,” Bell said. We’re both creative, so we can get deep into some random conversation and just feel like we’re creating something together.”
For their anniversary this year, Bell’s public toast to Shepard, whom she’s dated since 2007, immediately generated backlash on the internet.
“Happy 12th wedding anniversary,” the Frozen star posted, “to the man who once said to me: I would never kill you. A lot of men have killed their wives at a certain point. Even though I’m heavily incentivized to kill you, I never would.”

Commenters pointed out that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and said they found the post offensive. Others, meanwhile, attributed the caption to the couple’s dark humor.
Afterwards, Bell ended up missing a scheduled appearance Wednesday on the Today show.
The second season of Nobody Wants This is available to stream Oct. 23 on Netflix.
