Actor Katee Sackhoff is known for her memorable science fiction roles like Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica and, more recently, The Mandalorian. It was the latter role that the actor revealed recently, “broke” her.
Sackhoff starred as Bo-Katan Kryze in Disney+’s The Mandalorian from 2020 to 2023. The character originated in Star Wars: The Clone Wars as an animated version. The Mandalorian marked the first time Bo-Katan Kryze was seen in live-action form and was the leader of Mandalore when Night of a Thousand Tears ravaged the planet.
Now, Sackhoff is recalling how her time on The Mandalorian marked the beginning of a three-year hiatus from acting. “I lost all of my confidence after Mandalorian. All of it,” Sackhoff said on her podcast The Sackhoff Show, per Deadline.
“I’ve always played two steps removed from myself, in a sense. I always felt grounded in some part of my belly, of who I was. Bo-Katan is nowhere near who I am as a human being. Her life, what she wants – I didn’t understand her. As much as I understood her, I never felt her in my stomach. I never identified with her. I didn’t know how to find her,” she explained.
Sackhoff, who also voiced the Bo-Katan character in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, said that the live-action version was much more challenging than the voice role.
“It broke me. It just broke me,” Sackhoff admitted. “I started doubting everything about myself. I’m not a strong auditioner on tape, and I was having to put myself on tape. I wasn’t booking anything. And for three years, I basically didn’t work, and it just destroyed my confidence,” she said.
The lack of confidence led Sackhoff to connect with a new acting coach and manager. She said her acting coach told her, “‘My goal is not to teach you how to act. You know how to act. I just need to get you back in your belly. You just need to find your confidence again.’ That’s it.”
What’s Next for Katee Sackhoff?
Following her time on The Mandalorian, Sackhoff has appeared in just a few roles, including one episode of Law & Order and in the Josh Hartnett-led action/comedy film Fight or Flight. She’s been focusing more on voice roles, which have included reprising her Bo-Katan role for a 2024 episode of Star Wars: Tales of the Empire.
Sackhoff will soon appear in the new Amazon MGM series adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie from Mike Flanagan. She is playing a still-undisclosed role in the series, having previously worked with Flanagan on Oculus (2013).
“I trust Mike. I’ve relinquished control and I trust Mike, ‘cause I’ve worked with him before, and I know he’s amazing. I don’t know if I trust myself yet,” Sackhoff admitted.
In June 2025, it was announced that Summer Howell was cast in the titular role in Flanagan’s Carrie adaptation. Other stars cast in the series include Matthew Lillard, Heather Graham, Amber Midthunder, Alison Thornton, Michael Trucco, Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, Crystal Balint, and Danielle Klaudt. Carrie is slated for a 2026 release.
