Deadline first told you about Universal having another rendition of Miami Vice in the works with F1 and Top Gun: Maverick filmmaker Joseph Kosinski, and well, the studio, just confirmed that by putting a date against the title for Aug. 6, 2027. That’s where Uni has had good luck launching such summer finale action movies as Hobbs & Shaw.
Due to the dating, the Untitled Universal Event Film that was on Aug. 6, 2027 now goes to Friday, Sept 24, 2027 and will now be designated to an Untitled DreamWorks Animation Event Film.
Kosinski’s big screen version will explore the glamour and corruption of mid-80’s Miami, inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the NBC television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking. Pic will be shot in Imax. Casting is underway for a 2026 production start date.
The film is produced by Dylan Clark (The Batman) and Kosinski and written by Dan Gilroy and Eric Singer, based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich from the series executive produced by Yerkovich and Michael Mann. The show blasted off Don Johnson as a pin-up star in the role of Sonny Crockett, and Philip Michael Thomas and detective Ricardo Tubbs, in addition to a white suit fashion trend during the 1980s
Miami Vice won four Primetime Emmys and ran for 111 episodes from 1984-1989. Mann directed a 2006 feature version of the show with Jamie Foxx as Ricardo Tubbs and Colin Farrell as Sonny Crockett which grossed just under $164M worldwide.
