John Elway devastated, ‘withdrawn’ following tragic, freak death of friend and longtime agent

NFL legend John Elway is devastated by the loss of his longtime agent after his tragic death in a freak golf cart accident.

The football icon’s close friend and agent, Jeff Sperbeck, 62, died in April after falling off a golf cart that the former Denver Broncos star was driving.

A source tells us: “John is not coping well with the loss and the accident. He has been really upset and withdrawn.”

We hear Elway is normally a “man about town,” but is no longer social.

“He is very down,” says the source. “He is not his usual upbeat self.”

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office in California just announced that an investigation into the incident found no criminal activity, and that Sperbeck’s death was an accident.

“It’s over,’’ Riverside Sheriff Chad Bianco told local outlet 9NEWS on Friday. “We’ve talked to everyone involved and we found nothing new. There was nothing criminal, it was what we’ve been saying all along that this was a tragic accident.”

The incident happened at the ultra exclusive, members-only golf course designed by Tom Fazio at the Madison Club in La Quinta, Calif.

Adele, Justin Bieber, Apple billionaire Tim Cook, Universal Music Group’s Lucian Grange, and the Kardashian and Jenner fam have multimillion dollar mansions in the private enclave.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, who sported a hat with the club’s logo, reportedly stayed there during the Coachella music festival in 2024.

Elway reportedly owns a $5 million villa in the area.

Elway, who also served as the Broncos GM, gave a heartfelt statement following Sperbeck’s death.

“There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me,” the football star, 65, said in April.

“My heart and deepest sympathies go out to Jeff’s wife, Cori; his children Carly, Sam and Jackson; and everyone who knew and loved him. Jeff will be deeply missed for the loyalty, wisdom, friendship and love he brought into my life and the lives of so many others.”

Sperbeck became Elway’s agent in the ’90s, and they were also business partners in the winery 7Cellars.

An attorney for Elway did not immediately respond.
