John Cena implies Brock Lesnar’s WWE return wasn’t on his final year wishlist

When asked about Brock Lesnar’s controversial return to WWE at the SummerSlam Night Two press conference on the SummerSlam Night Two Post Show panel, part of WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque’s answer included talk of “John Cena’s wish list” and the feud Lesnar started by attacking Cena to close the weekend being “about John being able to go out the way he wants to go out”.

Some – this writer among them – took that as Triple H implying WWE brought Lesnar back at least partially at Cena’s request. That could be true. Cena and Lesnar have faced each other six times in their storied careers. But Lesnar obviously wouldn’t be back regardless unless WWE and TKO management wanted Lesnar back. And if they want Lesnar back, it means they’re okay with profiting off him despite the fact he’s named in a currently open sex trafficking lawsuit against the company and its former Chairman, Vince McMahon.

The question was, would Cena push back on The Game’s implication in any way? Cena’s a tried and true “company man”, and passionately defends his allegiance to McMahon in the face of all the allegations against his former boss.

“NY’s number 1 Street Journalist” Adam Glyn caught up with Cena either yesterday or today (the video was posted today, Aug. 5), and asked him for his thoughts on a potential match with Lesnar and what was going through his head when Brock showed up at MetLife Stadium on Sunday night.

“I’ve been saying the same thing for 25 years: They deal ’em, I play ’em.”

“I’m just really excited. We’ve got like 12 of these things left. I think SummerSlam was an indication from the audience where everybody kind of knows we’re closing our book. And just because I close my book in December, that doesn’t mean the WWE closes its books. They’ve got to continue their programming going forward. So, they’re just trying to make the most exciting shows for the fans and for the dozen of them I got left – they deal ‘em, I play ‘em.”

Which seems to me like he’s still being a company man, but only to the extent that he’s down for whatever WWE decides is best for business – not to the point he’s willing to fall on the sword Triple H left sticking out of the ground for him.
