CINCINNATI, Ohio — Steelers coach Mike Tomlin made shockwaves on Monday when he criticized the Browns and general manager Andrew Berry for trading Flacco to the AFC North rival Bengals.
During his press conference on Tuesday, Flacco was asked for his thoughts on Tomlin’s comments.
“I didn’t get to see how upset he was. But, you know, I think he’s probably just playing the game a little bit and doing whatever he has to do,” Flacco told reporters.
A day after beating the Browns, 23-9, Tomlin was blunt about his thoughts on Cleveland sending Flacco to a division rival in Cincinnati.
“To be honest, it was shocking to me,” Tomlin told reporters on Monday. “Andrew Berry must be a lot smarter than me or us because it doesn’t make sense to me to trade a quarterback that you think enough to make your opening day starter to a division opponent that’s hurting in that area. But that’s just my personal feelings.”
The comments from Tomlin come at an interesting time because Flacco and the Bengals will host the Steelers on Thursday night at Paycor Stadium.
Flacco has plenty of history going up against Tomlin, particularly from when he played for the Ravens from 2008-18. Flacco was 11-11 in 22 matchups with Tomlin and the Steelers.
“I have so many great memories of playing these guys and so much respect for them as a team,” Flacco said. “Even though they’ve changed over the years, still a lot of those same guys and familiar faces and just a lot of respect for what they’ve been able to do. And always battling against those guys, you know you’re in for a good one.”
