JK Rowling Posts Emma Watson Parody Video After Rift Comments Go Viral

J.K. Rowling weighed in on Emma Watson‘s viral interview on the “On Purpose With Jay Shetty” podcast by sharing a parody video of the “Harry Potter” actor’s appearance. Comedian IntelLady spoofed Watson’s interview, in which the actor said she would be open to talking to Rowling again amid their continued rift over Rowling’s comments on the trans community. Rowling praised the video and added in her caption: “I’m here for all the spoofs.”

Watson, who has largely been out of the Hollywood spotlight for the last seven years, spoke about her rift with Rowling for the first time during her interview with Shetty. The actor played Hermione Granger in the eight “Harry Potter” films released by Warner Bros. between 2001 and 2011.

A rift between Rowling and Watson started in 2020 after the “Harry Potter” author started sharing views on the transgender community that many found to be transphobic. Watson joined “Harry Potter” co-stars like Daniel Radcliffe by publicly opposing Rowling, sharing in a statement: “Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren’t who they say they are.”

Rowling later went on record saying she would “never forgive” Watson or her co-stars after they “cosied up to a movement intent on eroding women’s hard-won rights.” Watson was asked by Shetty on the new podcast episode to weigh in on these comments.

“I really don’t believe that by having had that experience and holding the love and support and views that I have, mean that I can’t and don’t treasure Jo and the person that I had personal experiences with,” Watson said. “I will never believe that one negates the other and that my experience of that person, I don’t get to keep and cherish. To come back to our earlier thing — I just don’t think these things are either or. I think it’s my deepest wish that I hope people who don’t agree with my opinion will love me, and I hope I can keep loving people who I don’t necessarily share the same opinion with.”

“I think the thing I’m most upset about is that a conversation was never made possible,” Watson added.

When Shetty asked if she remained open to having that dialogue, Watson replied, “Yeah, and I always will. I believe in that. I believe in that completely.”

Rowling has yet to take Watson up on her offer. Check out her post sharing the Watson parody in the tweet below.
