Jets acquire John Metchie from Eagles in Michael Carter trade

The Jets and Eagles swapped fringe roster players and draft picks Wednesday afternoon.

The Jets sent cornerback Michael Carter II and a 2027 seventh-round pick to the Eagles for wide receiver John Metchie III and a 2027 sixth-round draft pick.

It’s the first move of trade-deadline season for the Jets, who are expected to be active participants with a new regime in charge and a 1-7 record on the season.

Metchie, a second-round pick of the Texans in 2022, had four catches for 18 yards in seven games this season for Philadelphia.

He joins a banged-up receivers room that includes top target Garrett Wilson and Josh Reynolds dealing with injuries as they enter their Week 9 bye.

Metchie had 40 catches and one touchdown in his two seasons in Houston before being traded to the Eagles this offseason.

He could see action beginning in Week 10 against the Browns, with time to prove himself worthy of a second NFL contract as he enters the final season of his four-year, $8 million deal.

Carter, a fifth-round pick of the Jets in 2021, returned to action last week after missing three games with a concussion.

He finishes his Jets tenure with 24 starts over 65 games played, totaling a pair of interceptions and 223 tackles, 10 of them for a loss, including a sack.

“New York, I’m forever grateful! You changed my life,” he wrote on X. “So much love to all my dawgs in the building. Greatness is on the way!”

He had two years remaining on a three-year extension he signed in 2024, but removed a $5 million injury guarantee for 2026 as part of the move to join the reigning Super Bowl champs, per NFL Network.

Other players who could potentially be shipped out before the NFL trade deadline hits at 4 p.m. ET Nov. 4 are running back Breece Hall, defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, defensive end Will McDonald and receiver Allen Lazard.

Hall has been among the hottest names on the rumor mill since April’s draft, though the team has repeatedly said it plans to hang onto the 24-year-old rusher, who is in the final season of his rookie deal and is coming off a three-score, 133-yard rushing performance in the Jets’ win over the Bengals.
