Who is the next senior level executive planning to leave Apple? Mark Gurman dropped a clue in his Power On newsletter this week.
Responding to a question about Apple’s current succession plan, especially after Jeff Williams’ upcoming retirement, Gurman says there is pretty explicit talk within the company about more senior level departures coming.
I am hearing pretty explicitly that there are more departures set to come from the most senior levels of Apple. So I’d expect at least one other major exit next year, if not earlier.
The phrase “pretty explicitly” certainly engages the imagination. My first reaction was to glance at Apple’s leadership page.
Gurman has previously said he doesn’t expect the CEO spot to open in the next year or two. Tim Cook is seven days shy of hitting the 14 year mark in his current role, and he shows no signs of retiring just yet.
Phil Schiller could actually retire, but his Apple Fellow position probably serves him as much as he serves Apple.
Eddy Cue and Greg “Joz” Joswiak are basically tied in age (there’s an 11-month gap with Joz taking the age lead there). If I had to guess who retired first, though, I’d sooner picture Eddy spending his days court side, wearing pants and sandals, at an NBA game every night of the week. Joz taking over for Schiller a few years ago just makes me think he’ll want to hold on to that seat for several more years if possible.
But there’s one senior level executive on Apple’s leadership page who feels like the most likely candidate to be the subject of a friendly press release between now and the end of next year: John Giannandrea, Senior Vice President of Machine Learning and AI Strategy.
The ex-Googler just doesn’t seem long for Apple’s leadership page given his title and the company’s miscalculation over the importance of AI over the last few years.
Or maybe it’s Johny Srouji, but he seems to really enjoy his work and there hasn’t been much effort at preparing whoever will replace him as the SVP of Hardware Technologies, at least publicly.
What’s your best guess, and why?
