Sometime in the last 24 hours, I felt something change within me. Mercury is in retrograde, after all. But today, I discovered that this has nothing to do with planetary configurations and everything to do with my personal sun and my stars: Jason Momoa’s beard.
On Wednesday, the 45-year-old actor shaved off his perfect beard to promote his aluminum water-bottle company, Mananalu. If you’re feeling particularly masochistic on this hot Thursday, you can watch the massacre take place in video form.
“I launched @mananalu to help eliminate single-use plastic. Now, we’re taking it even further, partnering with our team at @Getboomerangwater to bring in a closed-loop system that sanitizes and bottles water onsite,” he captioned his Instagram post. “That means even less waste, reduced shipping footprint, and our aluminum bottles get reused over and over.”
In some ways, what’s happened here is actually akin to an astrological event, in that it goes down every six years. In 2019, Momoa shaved off his beautifully bushy beard to raise awareness for the fact that we are drowning the earth in single-use plastic … and also to promote the launch of Mananalu. Now here he is again, taking an electric shaver to the wispies that dangle so lusciously from his chin.
I was not previously aware that Jason Momoa’s beard was something I cherished, but I’m strangely destabilized by his bare upper lip. I’m not the only one mourning. Looking at his newly naked face, Momoa laughs, “Goddamn it, I hate it!” Was it worth it, Jason?
