James Gunn is opening up about the big twist featured in Superman.
DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures’ Superman is now playing in United States theaters and IMAX. Written and directed by Gunn, the movie stars David Corenswet as the titular superhero, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
Bradley Cooper and Angela Sarafyan, meanwhile, play Superman’s birth parents, Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van. About halfway through the film, there’s a twist revealing that, unlike previous Superman stories and adaptations, Kal-El was sent to Earth to conquer the planet and to take as many wives as needed in order to restore the Kryptonian race.
What did James Gunn say about the twist in Superman?
Speaking with IGN, Gunn discussed the moment and why he included it in the movie.
“I’m a huge Superman fan, so, first of all, I had to trust myself that I was going to honor the pieces of Superman that we needed to keep the same, and also allow myself to make changes where changes might work and wouldn’t go against the integrity of who the character is,” he said. “And so, I think that was simply — dealing with some of those things was simply dealing with allowing ourselves to change part of the story in a way that was interesting for the DCU, but that wasn’t something that went against who Superman was. And it has been something that’s been played with in the comics before.”
The cast of Superman also includes Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and more.
“Superman, DC Studios’ first feature film to hit the big screen, is set to soar into theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures,” the official synopsis reads. “In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor, and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.”
