Football fans were treated to a rollercoaster Week 1 slate to launch the new season. They probably should’ve known they were in for a whirlwind after the first game started with Eagles defender Jalen Carter spitting on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott after the opening kickoff.
Prescott remarkably kept his cool, while Carter was swiftly ejected. The NFL predictably didn’t suspend Carter, noting that his ejection met the criteria for a suspension. They instead fined him $57,222. He will be available to face the Chiefs this weekend.
That’s a pretty light punishment considering Carter spit on another player, but botching discipline is nothing new for the league. If nothing else, all of this paints Carter as one of the NFL’s biggest villains in this season, and that’s exactly what he was labeled by FanSided’s Adam Patrick.

“… During a small delay after the opening kickoff due to an injured player, Carter was ejected from the contest for spitting on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. Regardless of why it happened, it’s just not something that’s going to be tolerated in the NFL,” Patrick wrote.
“Unfortunately for Carter, this incident is likely going to stick with him for the rest of his career. He could go on to win the league’s Defensive Player of the Year award, and some people are still going to say, ‘Hey, isn’t that the guy who spat on Dak Prescott?'”
Before Eagles fans attempt to downplay the incident again, yes, Carter spitting on the quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys is going to stick with him for the rest of his career.
Forget Week 1 villains. Carter is unofficially the NFL’s top antagonist for the 2025 season. Much like Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair earned that label last year for his outrageously dirty hit on Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence, football fans have now passed the torch to Carter.

Between the NFL not handing down a stricter punishment, Carter’s half-hearted apology that conveniently excluded Prescott, and Eagles fans screaming “Dak spit first,” the former No. 9 overall pick has the “Joker” role down to a tee.
For the last time: we cannot stress how insignificant it is that Prescott spit on the ground before Carter spit on another human. There is no justifying a grown man not being in control of his emotions and hocking a loogie on someone.
Prescott will have a target on his back the next time Dallas and Philly lock horns. But with the way Carter is ruffling feathers at NFL headquarters, who knows if he’ll even be on the field for that game?
