Is Beyoncé’s Levi’s Ad Teasing Act 3 or Throwing Shade?

Better not call Becky with the good jeans: Beyoncé knows how to get the internet buzzing with a denim ad of her own, no eugenics controversy necessary. Her latest commercial for Levi’s convinced the BeyHive that more music is on the way. The 90-second video opens with her riding a horse and ends with her driving off on a motorcycle, which has heightened speculation (manifestation) that the main genre of Act III will be rock. The ad is split into three parts that are labeled as “The Ice,” “The Heat,” and “The Smoke.” According to a fan theory that these sections represent her last album releases, the opening scene where Beyoncé dumps diamonds into a laundry machine could be a Renaissance reference, while the next scene in a diner could be a nod to Cowboy Carter (especially given country singer and “Just for Fun” collaborator Willie Jones’s cameo). Others online have noted that “The Smoke” makes them think of Bey’s “Smoke Hour” interlude, which includes a Roy Hamilton interpolation by way of the lyric, “Come on, baby, it’s time to rock.”
