iPhone 17 case lineup could take design cue from AirPods Pro

When Apple unveils the iPhone 17 lineup next month, it seems like we’ll also see a new version of Apple’s first-party protective cases as well. If the latest rumors are true, the iPhone 17 case lineup will take a design cue from the AirPods Pro 2 charging case.

It appears Apple is planning to add support for an optional lanyard loop to its official iPhone 17 cases. That’s according to leakers Majin Bu and DuanRui.

Apple already includes a similar lanyard loop slot on the AirPods Pro 2 charging case. The rumored lanyard loop slot on the iPhone 17 case design appears similar.

First, DuanRui shared this post on X that shows a lanyard loop slot on either side of the bottom of the iPhone 17 Pro case from Apple (based on a design file). The Chinese-to-English translation reads: “The official phone case for the iPhone 17 Pro series will have two additional lanyard holes at the bottom.”

Separately, Majin Bu published a blog post that shows the so-called Liquid Silicone case design. Majin Bu echoes the claim that Apple plans to support optional lanyard accessories on the iPhone 17 case lineup this year. The post also shows what may be the new design for Apple’s silicone case, although it’s always possible Apple uses this design on a Beats-branded case instead.

The trend just further pushes the iPhone into dedicated camera territory. Point-and-shoot cameras usually come with a lanyard right out of the box to help you avoid dropping and losing your camera while shooting. Apple has already added a dedicated Camera Control to the iPhone, essentially putting a shutter button right where you would expect it.

Years ago, Apple had an even more innovative solution with the iPod touch, but a later revision of the iPod touch removed the built-in retractable lanyard button.

What do you think? Should Apple add a lanyard loop slot on its first-party iPhone cases? Both leakers credibly pointed to FineWoven cases being a thing in previous years, so there’s reason to trust their findings.

Third-party iPhone cases already offer similar functionality for existing iPhones, like Bellroy’s awesome Venture Case, but the move would be a first for an Apple-branded case — even if the lanyard is sold separately, as is the case with the AirPods Pro 2 charging case.
