Indian Film Board Censors ‘Superman’ for Being Too ‘Sensual’

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s yet another censored franchise film. India’s Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has cut 41 seconds from James Gunn’s tentpole Warner Bros. DCU film “Superman,” with the board citing that certain scenes were “overly sensual.”

The sequences that did not air in India are two kiss scenes involving the titular superhero (David Corenswet) and Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), plus a shot of Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) AKA one of the Green Lanterns making a middle finger with his super-powered ring in one fight scene. A Bollywood Hungama report, as The Wrap reported on, deemed the eight-second middle finger scene to be including a “foul gesture.”

Despite the cuts, “Superman” still was the #1 movie in India with the biggest opening weekend for a DC film ever in that country, as Warner Bros. India tweeted. The feature is playing in theaters in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu languages.

“Superman” isn’t the only buzzy film to have had certain cuts in order to debut in theaters in India: Apple Original film “F1” was self-censored by the studio before submitting it to the CBFC. A scene with Brad Pitt’s character sending a middle finger emoji was expected to be changed anyways by the board; the scene instead swapped the middle finger emoji for to a fist bump one.

Yet with Brosnahan and Corenswet’s acclaimed chemistry as Lois and Clark Kent going viral amid the “Superman” press, DCU fans in India are voicing their dismay at not having the two lead characters kiss onscreen.

Brosnahan previously detailed how she was cast in the role of Lois, telling People, “We’d had this brief but obviously impactful moment together during our chemistry read… but I think we [David and I] both left feeling like we didn’t remember anything about it, and wanted to spend some time together. We had a really lovely breakfast [in New York] after we found out we were going to be playing the roles together… and got to know each other that way,” Brosnahan said.

Co-star Corenswet added, “The next thing that happened was we found out we were cast. We didn’t know each other at all.”
